“A systemic approach for highly integrated industrial and thermal energy systems”

For the decarbonization of the energy intensive industry and service sector, high temperature levels and energy demand densities are resulting in a high need for renewable fuels such as biofuels and hydrogen. Since those sources are scarce, their cascaded use plays an important role. On the other hand, waste heat from industry plays an increasing role in the decarbonization of district heating networks since the currently dominating combined heat and power plants will have a decreasing role. Further on, district heating can help to serve industrial processes with low temperature requirements and the supply of process cooling opens new possibilities. District heating networks are thus an important platform for the mutual exchange of energy (e.g. as a hub between two industrial companies) and part of the circular economy.
